LIFT Project Artist Analysis

Edward George

Edward George has created this project called Promised Lands; he has over one hundred links to different sounds and songs along with images to
represent the song.
In this image Edward has chosen there is a map of an area along with two other images of the landscape of the country; the song witch is to go with this image is called "Give another Israel a try" by Barry brown, the song is about giving Israel another try because of the war that has been going on, so the song is saying give them another try and see if peace can be brought to all countries, the image goes well with the song because in the right hand side image it shows a part of a town in Israel witch has been destroyed by war; the middle image shows you the parts of Israel where there has been war this sets the tone of the song because when you hear the song without seeing the images you feel its quite an upbeat song and slightly happy, but when you hear the song and see the image at the same time it changed the prospective of the song completely because then you understand that the song is about the war in Israel and who we should all stop and forgive and "give them another try".

In this image this could be related to Eddies childhood memories; the song is quite mellow and in the style of reggae and the song is called "father and dreadlocks" and the song is about a father getting his son into school and the son comes home from school and his dad has changed and so has the son because they had been away from each other for so long. in the song the son says to the father "i have seen a promised land" witch is what Edwards website is all about so the song relates to his work.

The images used to go with this song are dramatic because you see a father and his son and the son is on his fathers back as a young child so the son is remembering how life used to be before he left home.

Sue Mayo
Sue Mayo is a theatre practitioner with 30 years experience, currently associate tutor on the MA in Applied Drama at Goldsmiths, University of London.  She is associate artist with Magic Me, with whom she has worked for 15 years, and is co-author with Susan Langford, of Sharing the Experience, a handbook of arts-based inter-generational practice. She is interested in the benefits and challenges of creative work that is situated in communities with diverse cultural and faith identities, and the building of a temporary community within a project.

Sue worked with a group of women aged from young teens to the elderly; they wrote and performed poetry and helped people overcome the fear of performance and help build their self-esteem. Sue was the theater practitioner and help the girls and women to perform and to not be afraid to speak out loud and be herd, the group of women were formed from Mulberry School for Girls and the Older women from the London Borough of Tower, they all worked together every Wednesday to create a performance of their poetry.

My thoughts and ideas of this project Sue Mayo worked on is that it is a good way for the young community to get in touch with the elder community in London and to be able to work together to create poetry and a performance is amazing; some of the comments i read were very positive and most of the women their couldn't believe everyone got together so well. I think its important for projects like this to be around and available to people because it brings everyone together and helps people all ages over come their fears.

Dan Scott

Dan Scott is an artist i met when a project called lift witch work with archiving and memory's came to my school Chestnut Grove to work with my art class in a group project; he is a sound artist witch means he works with sound, he has done many projects over the years and is now working with Sue Mayo and Edward George in the LIFT project.

Dan Scott recently done a project called The Minute Museum he worked with his partner Trish Scott and the project is meant to represent a one minute of city life; the 60 seconds were recorded in Barcelona on the 1st of October 2008, he broke down the components and explored different senses, he used objects, colours, smells and sounds, he commented saying “One can see the world and see nothing. To achieve understanding it is necessary not to see many things, but to look hard at what you do see.”

I think this project sounds very interesting and a fun way of expressing the city life, by using smells and sounds as well as visual objects he created a real experience of the real thing without actually going to Barcelona; if he didn't use the smells or sound you would have the same effect as you would have done with the smells and sounds. He used a keyboard to play the sounds of the City every note being a different sound, so you could make your own complement of the city sounds.

  1. Hi Shelley-Anne,
Good start to your analysis. You'll need to push your analysis a bit further. You must use the guidance sheets provided and make clear links to the development of your own ideas. Lets go through this on the 30th.
